Okay, so you probably already determined that certain nutrition supplements might be important for your health. The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine publishes the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), which is the average daily level of nutrients to satisfy most healthy individual's nutrient requirements. A persons body may require more or less nutrients depending on age, sex, genetics, diseases and activity levels.

So when do you need supplements for your nutrition? Studies and research have shown there are times when an increase in vitamins or nutrients need to be adjusted. For example, in the 1920's it was realized that vitamin D was important for the prevention of rickets which lead to the fortification of certain foods. Doctors often check vitamin levels during blood tests and might recommend a daily supplement if a certain level is too low. Exercise and certain health conditions may also require a higher nutrient intake.

Trying to find the best nutritional supplements and doses can be time consuming and frustrating. The FDA regulates dietary supplements under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). It's the FDA's job to take action against misbranded or adulterated supplement products after they reach the market. These regulations are not as strict as the regulations of foods and drugs. A common saying is you get what you pay for, so you may want to look for quality suppliers who sell domestic products using domestic ingredients.
